Shalom My Friend,
I believe Rico Cortes had a teaching on praying. It's along the format of the Lords' Prayer. Three sections. Who you are addressing....Our Father In Heaven. The request/gratitude message.....in Y'shuas' name. The praise and thanking section comes last. Within these guidelines, it's pretty open for your own personal way of talking to our Abba. He hears everything we say, but this format honors Him as He should be honored. Rico has much to say about how we approach the Father and King.
I hope this helps you.
Love and Blessings,
Yitz'ach
I got the link to where he is praying the Amidah but I didn't see a teaching tho.
Greetings!
Myself having been raised Roman Catholic, prayer was just a matter of memorization, recitation, and lots of repetition. Very little in manner of heart, intention, or substance. When I first stepped out into true faith, praying was uncomfortable for me because I did not really know how and it was an intimidating endeavor. Yet, prayer is a great blessing given to us though...open communication with the Creator of all the universe! It is also one of our greatest spiritual weapons. I'll explain a bit of my own prayer life and hopefully it helps.
I usually try to start by remembering who I am talking too...My Creator, My God, My King, My Savior, My Shield, My Rock, My Life, My loving Father in Heaven. With that in mind I ask the Ruach to help me empty myself, lift my heart, and raise my voice. My communication ranges from praise, thanksgiving, worship, doting on God, telling Him how wonderful He is, honoring Him, petitioning Him, sharing my life with Him, etc.
"Well, He already knows all that is going on in my life." True, but that does not mean that He does not want to hear about it from you, or even discuss it with you! My wife is a bit of a scatterbrain (love you!), and she will tell the same stories over and over again, but she will light up every time she tells it and I am happy to see that light every time.
Just as I speak to my dad with the respect and honor he deserves, even though I am an adult now, he is still my dad and I know I can talk to him about anything. I can tell him that I love him, I can tell him I am proud to be his son, I can tell him the joys and heartaches of my life, I can express my needs, etc, etc.
Just as in Matthew 6:9-13, Y'shua teaches us a wonderful pattern for prayer, the most mind-blowing to me still is that He tells us to call him Father. Our Messiah patterns our relationship with the Most High God as the relationship between a loving father and child. So long as you approach Him in your prayers with the reverence, respect, and love that our loving Father deserves, feel free to open up your heart to Him, for that is what He yearns for!
I do not think that prayer has to be "more than talking with God." What is wrong with just talking to your Father? Remember, He is very, very interested in and concerned about you and the minutiae of your life. One of the best things for me was to just begin talking to Him. As I continued in my prayers and my study of scripture, the Ruach has been able to lead me deeper into my "prayer closet," and he will with you as well.
The most important thing about prayer is to do it! It can be easy to allow a busy life and schedule to interfere. Try making a certain part of your day your prayer time and stick to it, whether first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening. Make it a priority!
For some scriptural insight, look into how Moses and the prophets approached and communicated with God, and of course, Psalms. Also, look into the Temple Service. Rico has some wonderful teachings on that topic.
One last thing, but it is VERY IMPORTANT! It can be easy to keep our lips moving while we pray. Do not forget to take time to LISTEN for when the Father has something to say! Our communication with God goes both ways! I have been trying to learn to listen better lately myself.
I hope this ramble helps out a bit brother, as I am still learning too.
Shalom!
Dustin
Slave4Messiah, I highly recommend that you get a "Siddur" (Jewish Prayer Book) this a good place to start:hebrew4christians.com/Prayers/prayers.html
You can also find: "First Steps In Hebrew Prayer" on the same page.
Yitz'ach, You have your order opposite than we Jews pray. Rico's Teaching on "The Amidah"' is the correct order. See any "Siddur".
In Judaism our Prayer Book (Siddur)is patterned after the order in The Temple Service.
Sorry,I don't know about christian prayer but; I would interested to see your post on "How christians pray".
I questioned that myself coming from a christian background. Being a Luthrean, I was taught certain prayers to say. It has always bothered me. Because they were a memorization, Not how you truely feel when you were saying them. Remember when you Pray, He is your Master "Elohim", Think of it this way and this how I come before him. He is my King, only through him can I get Righteousness, Life, Liberty and Truthfulness. He has given me all these things and loves me, but If I dont show respect to him, what makes you think he will answer my prayers. You have to humble yourself before Adonai, you have to submit to him and do what he says, not what the words of men say. So write your own Psalms, be like David, Love him more then anything, Be humble and know who you are talking too. Im sure greatness will come from your mouth, when you Decree he is everything in your life.
Shalom
I've been using this booklet that Rico has on his site for download. I have added to it overtime but it's a good primer.
I also replaced Lord, God,The Good one and "the name" with YHVH, Adonai, Elohim, Tzadik and HaShem.

I believe it's a matter of balance. It's our way of drawing close to Him, becoming intimate and sharing our day, concerns, thankfulness and hopes. It's our set apart time to be with Him and getting to know Him and just as importantly - Him knowing us... Whatever you do, do it with deliberation and your everything like others above have counseled. Uncover your heart.
Hi, I am new tot his site. My boyfriend loves Rico Cortes and I listen to one of his teachings which was good plus I love how he speaks so fast! lol Anyway, I was going to start a post on how to pray as well. I pray by saying Dear Abba or Abba, is that a good way to start it? Should you pray everyday?
A bit of background: Growing up, I never went to church as my parents don't believe in Yah. My mom claims she believes in the Lord then says there is no "God" and why hasn't He helped me blah blah blah. So, I flipped flop in believing in "God" and would say no, I don't think there's a God and other times there is a God. I was interested in Judaism but didn't know how to get started on it as I was seeking for truth.
I need to keep praying more often. Gosh, I have been praying about different things that need to change for my life.
