    Chapter 1

  2. Interesting background.

Ephesus is a part of Asia Minor. Initially set up by the Amazons and eventually came to be THE place for the worship and Temple of Diana. This temple was renown even though destroyed several times, it was an excessive and extravagant temple to the goddess. Like the Holy Temple of YHVH, the builders also collected much in the way of gold, silver, art and treasure for it's construction.
    There are some references in Acts 19:35, 29, 20:4, 21;29, specifically Acts19:24-25.

The Fausset Commentary has the following: The Diana of Ephesus, instead of the graceful Grecian goddess of the chase, was a mummy-shaped body with many breasts, ending in a point, and with the head of a female with mural crown, and hands with a bar of metal in each; underneath was a rude block." Wiki has additional information and pics.

So finally, with a little help from a friend I was able to find the meaning for the word "Ephesus" (my eSword modules were no help as it only gave location...) -

"The primary meaning of the word "Ephesus" is "full-purposed; desirable." It's secondary meaning is "to let go; to relax."

    Rev 2:5 KJV
    (5) Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. (Exo 19:8 KJV)

    Hos 14:1 KJV
    (1) O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

    Eze 14:6 KJV
    (6) Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

    Rev 2:7 KJV
    (7) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.
    (Exo 19:9 KJV)

And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. (Exo 20:19 KJV)

Gen 2:9 KJV (9) And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Wisdom is referred to as the Tree of Life.

    Pro 3:18 KJV
    (18) She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

    And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
    (Rev 2:8 KJV)

Smyrna - 2. The word Smyrna means "bitterness; suffering." Its root comes from
"myrrh" — an ointment used in burial which must be crushed to release its fragrance.

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.(Exo 3:14 KJV)

How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation. (Dan 4:3 KJV)

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isa 7:14 KJV)

The LORD therefore hath performed his word that he hath spoken: for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. (2Ch 6:10 KJV)

  3. I'm going to split this into two sections; first will be a verse analysis with linkages to the Tanakh and Gospels, the second part will be an analysis of each of the assemblies.

    Verse Analysis

Verse 2 "...and have found them false"
    Exodus 23:1-7, Proverbs 21:28, Jeremiah 7:4; 23:30-32

Verse 7 "...give to eat from the tree of life"
    Genesis 2:9

Verse 9 "I know your works, and pressure, and poverty"
Enoch 46:5 speaks of the evil people finding strength in their riches:
They shall condemn the stars of heaven, shall life up their hands against the Most High, shall tread upon and inhabit the earth, exhibiting all their works of iniquity, even their works of iniquity. Their strength shall be in their riches, and their faith in the gods whom they have formed with their own hands. They shall deny the Name of the Lord of Spirits, and shall expel him from the temples, in which they assemble.

Verse 9 "...those who say they are Yehudim and are not, but are a congregation of Satan."
    John 8:39-44 & Romans 9:8

Verse 14 "…the teaching of Bil'am, who taught Balaq"
    Numbers 22-24, Ezekiel 44:6-8

Verse 17 "...I shall give some of the hidden manna to eat"
    John 6:31-35, 48-51

Verse 18 "...eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like burnished brass"
Both fire and brass are representative of judgment.

Verse 27 "he shall shepherd them with a rod of iron, as the potter's vessels shall be broken to pieces"
    Psalm 2:9

  4. Assembly analysis
The two main resources I used for this section are the Revelation study at yashanet.com and a book entitled "The Revelation of Yeshua: A First Century Look at a First Century Book" by Wally Smith.

There are varying opinions of what these messages mean to us today. Some believe that they speak of 7 different denominations (or denomination groupings) while others believe they speak of the church in different time periods. I agree with Wally Smith that these speak of different types of believers that can be within any denomination or sect. These messages are written to keep our path straight and so we must examine each one carefully in order to expose errors in our ways and correct them before Yeshua's return. I find it interesting that all 7 of these assemblies are located outside of the land of Israel, perhaps alluding to the fact that in the end times, we would be in diaspora

*** The Assembly of Ephesus ***

    Background on Ephesus

The city of Ephesus was one of three major commercial and cultural centers on the eastern side of the Mediterranean. Due to its being situated on a major trade route, there was immense wealth in the city. It contained one of the seven wonders of the ancient world: the temple of the Greek goddess Artemis (aka Diana of Rome, Ishtar of Babylon). The worship of this goddess drew thousands on pilgrimages for festivals and involved sexual relations with temple prostitutes. Since this was a major Greek cultural center, there was a love of intellect from which sprung up Gnostic theology. We know from Ephesians 2:19-22 that this congregation was made up primarily of former Gentiles (or perhaps lost sheep of the House of Yisrael) coming into the faith of Yisrael and thus new to Torah.

Yeshua begins by praising the assembly of Ephesus for their works, labor, endurance, and for testing emissaries and then admonishes them harshly for leaving their first love. So harsh is this admonishment that He threatens to remove their lampstand. Removal of the Menorrah (lampstand) is the equivalent of being "cut off" (Hebrew: karat H3772) from YHWH's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Yisrael; spiritual death.

So what is this first love that they left? We know that the Ephesians are former gentiles who have come into the faith of Yisrael and thus were new to the Torah. Ephesians 3:17 states: "That Messiah may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, ". This is a reference to Isaiah 37:31 which speaks of the remnant of Judah taking root downward and bearing fruit upward. How does Judah root downwards? It is through a return to Torah. Thus, the Ephesians must have forgotten their first love, the Torah, and with that forgetting of Torah, they probably forgot that as believers in Messiah Yeshua, they are Yisrael. This is also apparent when Yeshua pleads with the assembly to "repent and do the first works". The word 'repent' (Hebrew: shuv H7725) means to turn back and is associated with a return to Yah's Torah. How is it that this assembly could have so fast forgotten the Torah? Through the influx of gnostic teachings that were prevalent in the city of Ephesus.

Yeshua ends by praising the assembly for hating the works of the Nicolaitans. There are two possible explanations of who these Nicolaitans were/are:

    1. The 'Nicolaitans" where a group who followed a Jewish proselyte Nicolas of Antioch (believed to be the one mentioned in Acts 6:5). The early church identifies him as a heretic who fell away from the true faith and became the leader of a sect which rejected the Torah and indulged in the sexual immorality that was wide practiced in Ephasus. They claimed to have special enlightenment (Gnostic theology) which allowed their immoral behavior.
    2. Breaking apart the word 'Nicolaitan' you get two Greek words: 'nikos' meaning to conquer; 'laos' meaning people (i.e. laity). Thus some believe the term 'Nicolaitan' to mean "triumph over the people" and be alluding to the church system of setting up religious offices with a hierarchal structure.

Hierarchal structure of the assembly of Yisrael was established by Mosheh in Exodus 18 so this tends to go against definition #2. Also in the message to the assembly in Pergamos, the doctrine of the Nicolaitans is tied to the doctrine of Bil'am, which we know was a teaching of sexual immorality. Thus, I believe that the first definition is more correct (though both may be correct).

To summarize, the assembly of Ephasus does good deeds, shuns sexual immorality, and tests emissaries to find them false, yet these believers have embraced Gnosticism, believing that they know better than God's word and thus have left the Torah.

    *** The Assembly of Smyrna***

    Background on Smyrna

The city of Smyrna is about 35 miles north of Ephesus and is the only one of the seven cities listed in Revelation 2-3 that still exists today (now known as Izmir). This town was exceptionally loyal to Rome and the emperor. In it was built a temple to Tiberius, the Roman emperor from 14AD - 37AD and with this temple there was a decree that each citizen had to burn incense on Caesar's altar every year or risk imprisonment or death.
There was an unusually large Jewish population in this city at the time. Later on, in 155AD, Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, was burned at the stake in the city.

Yeshua begins by praising this assemblies perseverance through persecution and poverty. He then speaks of this blasphemy of people who claim to be Jews yet are not, instead being of the congregation of Satan. There are several possible explanations of this verse that we will explore. Judaism believes that there is an "evil remnant" within the Jews that are associated with the Erev Rav (mixed multitude) that came out of Egypt. Judaism blames the incidence of the golden calf on this erev rav.

Another possible explanation is from Yeshua's discussion with some of the Jews who believed in Him in John 8 where He emphatically tells them that they are not Abraham's seed, but in fact the spawn of Satan. This could mean that this assembly in Smyrna is infiltrated by those who claim to be believers, yet are not doing the works of Abraham. The final explanation I have for this comes from a teaching that Kimberly Rogers did called "The Esau Effect" (LINK) where she discusses how Edomites infiltrated the Jews some years before Yeshua's birth (which is why Herod, an Edomite, was king of Judea at the time).

The adversary will persecute this congregation severely even unto death. Now, why does Yeshua state that there will be pressure for 10 days (versus 7 years of tribulation)? Consider this: in Judaism there is such a thing known as the "ten Days of Awe" which occur from Yom Teruah through Yom Kippur. This is known as a time of judgment yet repentance is still possible, it is a time of great trial. Thus this could be speaking of a literal 10 days or could be representative of a 7 year tribulation. Another 10 day trial period can be found in Daniel 1:10-18 where Daniel, Hannanyah, Mishael, and Azaryah ate only the food YHWH had originally intended for human diet and refrained from a worldly diet and as a result were exulted before the king.

One final note: Smyrna comes from the Hebrew word Myrrh which is associated with death. Yeshua refers to himself as one who became dead and came to life and then promises those who overcome shall be spared from the second death.

In summary, the assembly in Smyrna was probably made up mainly of Jews. They have faced much persecution and have been infiltrated by those who claim to be believers but are actually workers of Satan. This assembly will face extreme persecution and probably much death during the tribulation.

    *** The Assembly of Pergamum***

    Background on Pergamum

The city of Pergamum was built on a 1000 foot high mountain. It was the official capital of the Roman province of Asia. The city became one of the major intellectual centers and had a massive library that rivaled the great library of Alexandria in Egypt. After the fall of the Babylonian empire to the Medes and the Persians, the Babylonian priests were removed from their duties in Babylon. Being out of a job, they migrated to Pergamum which already had schools of medicine and law and set up religious schools. During Roman times, there was a massive altar to Zeus at the location as well as the Temple of Asclepius. Asclepius was the Greek god of healing whose symbol was a serpent any many sick came from all over the world to spend the night in the temple which contained hundreds of snakes. The sick fondled and fed the snakes as a method of worship.

The first note of interest in this passage to the assembly at Pergamum is how it is referred to as the throne of Satan. To understand this, we look to the history of the city. After the fall of Babylon, the sun god worship of Babylon was moved to this city. This fact, coupled with the massive altar to Zeus and a temple to a serpent god of medicine makes it quite clear why this was the throne of Satan. An interesting side note: the modern symbol of medicine is a serpent and as we will discuss later in the study, the book of Revelation speaks out specifically against our modern medical system and its reliance on pharmaceuticals.

Next Yeshua accuses the assembly of having members that adhere to the teachings of Bil'am. Why not simply accuse them of eating food offered to idols and sexual immorality? Because He wants us to go back and read the story of Bil'am so that we can learn from it. What is the teaching that we are supposed to learn from Bil'am? That the enemy has no power over us!! He cannot curse what YHWH has blessed, no weapon formed against us can harm us. Since he cannot directly attack us, he appeals to our desire to be like everyone else. The doctrine of Bil'am was to intermarry and assimilate. Moab would take on some of the Yisraelite practices and Yisrael would join in some of their practices. What was occurring in Numbers 22-25 is exactly what YHWH told them not to do in Deuteronomy 12:30-31 " "guard yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their mighty ones, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their mighty ones? And let me do so too.’ “Do not do so to יהוה your Elohim, for every abomination which יהוה hates they have done to their mighty ones, for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their mighty ones.". Bil'am used assimilation to cause the Yisraelites to corrupt the true worship of YHWH, much like Christianity has corrupted His worship with their pagan holy days. Tony Robinson of Restoration of Torah Ministries has a great teaching on this entitled "End Time Doctrine of Balaam". This perversion of the true worship of YHWH led to eating unkosher foods and sexual immorality.

Unlike Ephesus, some in the assembly at Pergamum do hold to esoteric doctrines that teach that their knowledge puts them above God's Word. For adhering to these two doctrines, those of this assembly are threatened with the sword of Yeshua's mouth which we know is the Torah. Perhaps these is alluding to the 3rd Trumpet blast of Revelation 8:10-11 where many men die from bitter waters (the same punishment as that of the adulterous bride in Numbers 5). Also, Yeshua's threat to punish them with His mouth is the contrasted with Bal'im, whose power came from his mouth as well.

Yeshua finishes by promising those who overcome with hidden manna (contrasting meat offered to idols) and a new name which nobody knows. This new name is something that is also done in Judaism; when one converts, he/she receives a Hebrew name. More importantly though, this white stone with a new name on it is alluding to ancient blood covenant: When two parties come in covenant, two of the steps are exchanging of names and a stone as a memorial.

In summary, the assembly at Pergamum has a major problem with with mixing the worship of Yahweh with pagan practices. This has led to sexual immorality and eating unkosher foods. They also follow the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which is one of esoteric doctrines and possibly a power structure where a few elite claim to wield spiritual authority over the masses.

    *** The Assembly of Thyatira***

    Background of Thyatira

Thyatira is the smallest of the seven cities of Revelation (though it receives the longest letter). The city was a military garrison which also had trade guilds that were full of pagan practices. One of the primary industries of this city was the making of bronze armor.

Yeshua begins by speaking of His feet being brass (symbolic of judgement). Brass and bronze are often interchangeable terms and Thyatira was a city of bronze armor makers.

Again we have a reference to an evil character out of the Tanakh who is associated with whoring and food offered to idols. Jezebel's story begins in 1 kings 16:31 where she is married to Ahab and immediately turns him to Ba'al worship (sun-god worship). in 1 Kings 18, Jezebel is responsible for massacring the prophets of Yahweh and in chapter 19 after Eliyah proves YHWH is the one True God and slaughters all Jezebel's priests, she tries to kill Eliyah. Fast-forward to chapter 21 and we see how Jezebel provokes her husband to give her authority to execute Naboth because of Ahab's covetness. Jezebel does not simply kill Naboth, she gives orders to falsely accuse him in order that his own people stone him to death. Satan did the same thing, bringing false witnesses against Yeshua so that His own people demanded His blood. Jezebel meets her demise in 2 Kings 9 where she first puts on make-up and then is subsequently tossed from her window by some of her servants. Similar to the fate of those who come against Yeshua in Revelation 19:17-18 and Ezekiel 39:4, 17-20, Jezebel ends up as feast for the birds and beasts.

Jezebel's teaching is one of of spiritual whoring, claiming belief in YHWH while worshiping other gods. Rabbi Daniel Lapkin did an interesting teaching on Glenn Beck's show about the Ba'als and how Ba'al worship is done through sexual immorality (which includes our quick divorce/marriage culture), public defecation, and many other things that we see associated with Woodstock, hippie/communist, and the Occupy protestors. Much like Jezebel slew Yahweh's prophets, her teaching results in death for those who follow her. Here is the link to the Daniel Lapkin teaching on Ba'al worship LINK

In summary, the assembly at Thyatira faces judgement because many of them follow the teachings of Jezebel; worshipping other gods through modern day Ba'al worship.

  5. All of Revelation can be better understood if you first have a knowledge of the Tabernacle/Temple, especially its furnishings. Did you notice the first assembly has to do with first love and the second assembly mentions second death? Alot of references to numbers hey?

  6. There is so much in this book that I was completely unaware of. Thank you Ryan and maccabwannab for the works that's going into this. I'm especially thankful for the commentary on the church name and their meanings.

Because there are 7 churches there are so many associations; the 7 days of creations, the 7 spirits of YHVH, and the 7 Feast of YHVH.

I'm sure we'll glean much from this, thanks again Ryan for starting this. It'll be interesting to see how many links there are to the directly in the Tanakh to the prophecies in Revelation.

  7. I updated my original two postings to include additional scriptural references as well as a discussion on the other two assemblies of Revelation 2. Please see above.

    Shalom,
    Ryan

  8. Your welcome Teresa!! Thank you for your additions to this study

I studied the themes of the letters to all 7 assemblies and here is what I came up with:

    Themes of each assembly:

    • Ephasus: Love
    • Smyrna: Death
    • Pergamum: Food/Eating
    • Thyatira: Judgement
    • Sardis: Life
    • Philadelphia: Building/Structure
    • Laodikeia: Kingship

So what is the message? Yeshua loves us so much that He took on death thus eating (taking into himself) the judgement that should have come upon us. Thus giving us eternal life so that we can join His household and share in the Kingship through our blood covenant.

I am starting a new link for Chapter 3 study but everyone please feel free to add to this chapter study or simply add comments!!

  9. I have a whole study on the pattern and order of the assemblies based on the tabernacle furnishings and their order. You are correct and here is why.
First the altar represents giving/offering given in love. The laver represents baptism, death to the old man.
Thirdly the table represents communion. Fourthly, the menorah represents the spirit that searches our inner man. The altar of incense represents prayer, breath, our life line to Yah. The ark represents the mind/conscience/memory, the most important piece. The structure of the tabernacle represents Sabbath rest, millinial reign. The order also follows the creation story too and everything else. The tabernacle is the key that unlocks all of scripture.

  10. Very interesting, thanks Evanna.

  11. The main message to the assemblies (the whole book) seems to be Shema Yisrael!

  12. Rev 2:1-7 Ephesus Assembly

Around 70 AD to 170 AD

From Patmos John wrote the book of Revelation which includes the seven letters to the seven churches. The historian Eusebius records that John did not die on Patmos but rather was returned to Ephesus from where he once again governed the churches of Asia Minor until his death at age 100. Hence we see in the history of the Ephesian church the history of the apostolic church age for John was the last of the apostles to walk with Jesus.

Rev 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

The letters to the 7 assemblies were written to believers, the admonitions are about how to "walk" once coming to the Faith.

It so happens that there was disagreement during this period concerning the Feast of Passover vs. Easter. Polycrates, the Bishop of Ephesus is best known for his letter addressed to the Roman Bishop Victor who was attempting to find a consensus about the proper date to celebrate Easter.

Rev 2:6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

Apparently the Nicolaitanes attempted to establish a priesthood within the church for the word in Greek means "to conquer the laity." All early church fathers agree that the Nicolaitanes held two serious heretical views: 1. That an ecclesiastical hierarchy was necessary to control the spiritual training of the laity; 2. That the spiritual and the physical natures were separate, giving license to sexual sin, the same licentiousness practiced in the heathen temple of Diana.
In Acts 20:28-30 Paul prophesied to the Ephesian church that following his death vile men from within their own flock would arise to teach perverse doctrine. Irenaeus, the Greek bishop and eloquent apologist of the city of Lyons during the latter half of the second century, was the first church father to suggest that the leader of the Nicolaitanes was the one called Nicholas in Acts 6:5. Nicholas was the last of the seven deacons appointed to distribute food to the widows of the church. This was not a position for a man unable to control his flesh. I quote bishop Irenaeus on Nicholas as saying "being ashamed of his own remissness Nicholas audaciously pronounced that no one who was not lascivious every day could be partaker of eternal life."

Rev 2:2 "found them to be liars"
    Deu 8:2, 13:1-5, Mat 7:15, 24:11,24, Mar 13:22, 2Pe 2:1, 1Jn 4:1.

Rev 2:4 "Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works;"

    Ex 19:8, Act 15:19-21, 21:20-25.

The seven letters seem to document what Paul describes in 2Th 2 as the great falling away from Moses, see G646 "apostasia" 2Th 2:3 and Act 21:21.

  13. Sorry for the duplication of some of what was already stated by Ryan and Teresa.

  14. Yeshua closes each of the 7 letters with "He that hath an ear, let him hear", He is giving us the key to overcoming, Sh'ma Yisrael.

Joh 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
Joh 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
Joh 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Joh 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Joh 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Joh 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
