Numbers 25:10-29:40

1 Kings 18:46-19:21

Pinchas WT

This Parashah covers the covenant of shalom that Pinchas receives for killing Cosbi and Zimri, the order to harass the Midianites because of Ba'al Peor, the census of the next generation of Israelites, the ruling over the daughters of Zelophad, the transfer of power from Mosheh to Joshua, and the commandments concerning the offerings for daily, Shabbat, New Moon, and Feast day services.

This teaching is a very important portion about the roles of Messiah during the first coming and the role of Messiah in the second coming.

The understanding of the Temple Service is critical to know in which role Yeshua came the first time. The point is about if Yeshua is the LITERAL KING OF THE EARTH RIGHT NOW? or The HIGH PRIEST OF THE HEAVENLY TABERNACLE?

You will be challenged by this teaching in trying to reconcile some things that we were instructed in the system of Christianity.

This page includes Torah Portions from multiple years covered by Wisdom in Torah. Each year we covered the Torah from a different perspective so you can explore each Parashah from a different perspective and focus.

  • 2010 Portions: Focus on Messianic connections in the Parashah
  • ANET Portions: Focus on the ancient Near Eastern cultural context of the Parashah
  • Mitzvot Portions: Focus on explaining and exploring the commandments found in the Parashah (in progress)
  • 2015 Portions: Revisiting the Parashah looking at the ancient cultural context more in depth with additional areas that have been researched
  • Brit Portions: Focus on connecting the Brit Hadashah (New Testament) to the Parashah

I am a teacher of Scriptures, Torah follower, and believer in Messiah Yeshua. I have been given the opportunity to share the Word of God with many believers around the world. My work as a servant of the Most High God has allowed me to be a voice to spread the good news of the New Testament, unveiling its truth through context and the obedience to the Almighty through his Torah.

  1. While making a chart of all the animals sacrificed in Numbers 28 & 29 to find the significance (like the years total of 1261 being one too many to have meaning), I saw that no animals were listed in Numbers 28:16 I guess because salvation is an individual thing and to have the High Priest do one for the nation (which is what happened) ruins the picture of individually coming over the threshold. Can anyone find instructions from YHVH directly the High Priest to do the Pesach sacrifice?

  2. While making a chart of all the animal sacrifices of Numbers 28 & 29 (how many bullocks, rams, lambs, and goats) to study the significance (like in one whole year there are 1261 –one too many to be meaningfull–), I saw Num 28:16 lists no animals I believe because it ruins the picture if the High Priest makes the Pesach sacrifice because salvation is an individual thing. Can anyone show me where the High Priest is instructed to make this sacrifice?…thought we know he did. Thanks for your help. Kathleen

One question on 1 Cor 10:8. In our translations, Paul states that 23,000 died on that day. As we read in the Torah portion, 24,000 died from the plague. Why the difference? Is this a translation error or is there some other significance to the discrepency?

    I looked at a few commentaries and found the following;

Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the whole bible
“… which brought on a plague, that in one day slew twenty-three thousand, besides those who fell by the hand of public justice.”

    Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary
    “Num 25:9
those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand — Only twenty-three thousand perished (1Co_10:8) from pestilence. Moses includes those who died by the execution of the judges [Num_25:5].”

    and

“The solution is: Moses in Numbers includes all who died “in the plague”; Paul, all who died “in one day”; one thousand more may have fallen the next day [Kitto, Biblical Cyclopaedia].”

Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible
“Three and twenty thousand – The Hebrew text in Num_25:9, is twenty-four thousand. In order to reconcile these statements, it may be observed that perhaps 23,000 fell directly by the plague, and 1,000 were slain by Phinehas and his companions (Grotius); or it may be that the number was between 23,000 and 24,000, and it might be expressed in round numbers by either – Macknight. At all events, Paul has not exceeded the truth. There were at least 23,000 that fell, though there might have been more. The probable supposition is, that the 23,000 fell immediately by the hand of God in the plague, and the other thousand by the judges; and as Paul’s design was particularly to mention the proofs of the immediate divine displeasure, he refers only to those who fell by that, in illustration of his subject – There was a particular reason for this caution in respect to licentiousness:”

Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible
“Fell in one day three and twenty thousand – In Num_25:9, the number is 24,000; and, allowing this to be the genuine reading, (and none of the Hebrew MSS. exhibit any various reading in the place), Moses and the apostle may be thus reconciled: in Num_25:4, God commands Moses to take all the heads (the rulers) of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun; these possibly amounted to 1000, and those who fell by the plague were 23,000, so that the whole amounted to 24,000. Instead of εικοσιτρεις χιλιαδες, 23,000, two MSS., with the later Syriac and the Armenian, have εικοσιτεσσαρες χιλιαδες, 24,000; but this authority is too slender to establish a various reading, which recedes so much from the received text. I think the discordance may be best accounted for by supposing, as above, that Phineas and his companions might have slain 1000 men, who were heads of the people, and chief in this idolatry; and that the plague sent from the Lord destroyed 23,000 more; so an equal number to the whole tribe of Levi perished in one day, who were just 23,000. See Num_26:62; and see Lightfoot.”

John Gills Exposition on the Entire Bible
“and fell in one day three and twenty thousand; in Num_25:9 the number said to be “twenty and four thousand”: and so say all the three Targums on the place (w), and both the Talmuds (x) and others (y); on the other hand, all the Greek copies of this epistle, and the Oriental versions, agree in the number of twenty and three thousand; so that it does not appear to be any mistake of copies, in either Testament. To reconcile this matter, or at least to abate the difficulties of it, let the following things be observed; as that the apostle does not write as an historian, and so not with that exactness as Moses did; besides, he does not say that there fell “only” three and twenty thousand, and this beings lesser number than is contained in his, and so a certain truth; moreover, Moses and the apostle use different words in their account; Moses says there died so many, including the heads of the people that were hanged up against the sun, and all that perished by the sword; the apostle says, that there fell such a number, referring only to the latter, who only could be properly said to fall, and not those that were hanged up: now the heads of the people that suffered the first kind of death, might, as is very probable, be a thousand; and they that died in the other way, three and twenty thousand, which make the sums to agree, and both are expressed by Moses, under the general name of a plague or stroke; to all this, that the apostle uses a limiting clause, which Moses does not, and says that these three and twenty thousand fell in one day. So that it is very likely that the heads of the people, supposed to be a thousand, were hanged up in one day; and the three and twenty thousand that fell by the sword died the next, which the apostle only takes notice of. Hence the Jew (z) has no reason to charge the apostle with an error.

    (w) Targum Onkelos, Jon. ben Uzziel & Jerusalem in Numb, xxv. 9. (x) T. Hieros Sota, fol. 21. 4. T. Bab. Sanhedrin, fol. 106. 1. (y) Midrash Kohelet, fol. 68. 4. Tzeror Hammor, fol. 127. 3. (z) R. Isaac Chizzuk Emuna, par. 2. c. 36. p. 468.”

    Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge
    “Num 25:9
St. Paul reckons only 23,000: Moses includes in the 24,000 he names, the 1,000 men who were slain in consequence of the judicial examination (Num_25:4), as well as the 23,000 who died of the plague; while St. Paul only refers to the latter.”

    John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes
“Num 25:9 Twenty four thousand – St. Paul says twenty three thousand, 1Co_10:8. The odd thousand here added were slain by the Judges according to the order of Moses, the rest by the immediate hand of God, but both sorts died of the plague, the word being used, as often it is, for the sword, or hand, or stroke of God.”

I also added the following reference because it’s one of the best explanation I’ve heard for Phinchas actions and further illustrates the difference between the chiefs (Zimri) and the people.

    “Num 25:6-15
Here is a remarkable contest between wickedness and righteousness, which shall be most bold and resolute; and righteousness carries the day, as no doubt it will at last.
    I. Never was vice more daring than it was in Zimri, a prince of a chief house in the tribe of Simeon. Such a degree of impudence in wickedness had he arrived at that he publicly appeared leading a Midianitish harlot (and a harlot of quality too like himself, a daughter of a chief house in Midian) in the sight of Moses, and all the good people of Israel. He did not think it enough to go out with his harlot to worship the gods of Moab, but, when he had done that, he brought her with him to dishonour the God of Israel. He not only owned her publicly as his friend, and higher in his favour then any of the daughters of Israel, but openly went with her into the tent, Num_25:8. The word signifies such a booth or place of retirement as was designed and fitted up for lewdness. Thus he declared his sin as Sodom, as was so far from blushing for it that he rather prided himself in it, and gloried in his shame. All the circumstances concurred to make it exceedingly sinful, exceedingly shameful. 1. It was an affront to the justice of the nation, and bade defiance to that. The judges were ordered to put the criminals to death, but he thought himself too great for them to meddle with, and, in effect, bade them touch him if they durst. He had certainly cast off all fear of God who stood in no awe of the powers which he had ordained to be a terror to evil-doers. 2. It was an affront to the religion of the nation, and put a contempt upon that. Moses, and the main body of the congregation, who kept their integrity, were weeping at the door of the tabernacle, lamenting the sin committed and deprecating the plague begun; they were sanctifying a fast in a solemn assembly, weeping between the porch and the altar, to turn away the wrath of God from the congregation. Then comes Zimri among them, with his harlot in his hand, to banter them, and, in effect, to tell them that he was resolved to fill the measure of sin as fast as they emptied it.
II. Never was virtue more daring than it was in Phinehas. Being aware of the insolence of Zimri, which it is probable, all the congregation took notice of, in a holy indignation at the offenders he rises up from his prayers, takes his sword or half-pike, follows those impudent sinners into their tent, and stabs them both, Num_25:7, Num_25:8. It is not at all difficult to justify Phinehas in what he did; for, being now heir-apparent to the high-priesthood, no doubt he was one of those judges of Israel whom Moses had ordered, by the divine appointment, to slay all those whom they knew to have joined themselves to Baal-peor, so that this gives no countenance at all to private persons, under pretence of zeal against sin, to put offenders to death, who ought to be prosecuted by due course of law. The civil magistrate is the avenger, to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil, and no private person may take his work out of his hand. Two ways God testified his acceptance of the pious zeal of Phinehas: – 1. He immediately put a stop to the plague, Num_25:8. Their weeping and praying prevailed not till this piece of necessary justice was done. If magistrates do not take care to punish sin, God will; but their justice will be the best prevention of his judgment, as in the case of Achan, Jos_7:13. 2. He put an honour upon Phinehas. Though he did no more than it was his duty to do as a judge, yet because he did it with extraordinary zeal against sin, and for the honour of God and Israel, and did it when the other judges, out of respect to Zimri’s character as a prince, were afraid, and declined doing it, therefore God showed himself particularly well pleased with him, and it was counted to him for righteousness, Psa_106:31. There is nothing lost by venturing for God. If Zimri’s relations bore him a grudge for it, and his friends might censure him as indiscreet in this violent and hasty execution, what needed he care, while God accepted him? ” (Mathew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible)

Excellent question – thanks for the bible study!

  5. Shalom Rico,
I just wanted to say thank you. I am learning so much, and your zeal for the Torah and Yah’s people is such an encouragement. It is contagious, and it is for a blessing! Please, do continue to share what you are learning and the tools that brought you understanding. It is beneficial for us, and it gives us an opportunity to study if for ourselves, when we have not know where to look =) Please, be encouraged, and please, do continue to share the message, the good news!

  6. Rico,
This teaching especially blessed my wife and I. Thanks for that. Keep on keeping on, brother! Blessing to you and your household!

    Matt

(we got those Hebrew names lined out btw…)

  7. Shalom Pakinpastor,

Rico has a link on his website for all of his teachings listed under “E-Store”. Many of his teachings are accessible for viewing straight from the web site as well although he does have “Bundled Teachings” along with solo lessons a la carte. 🙂

    http://wisdomintorah.com/

I would encourage you to explore his site to find all that he has available; he has Power Points for some of his teachings. With respect to the timeline and the harpazo, Lion & Lamb ministries has one you can access at http://lionlamb.net/v3/images/yavoh/2008/TribulationTimeline.pdf.

We don’t know if we are of the 10 tribes technically, unless you take a DNA test, but that still may be inconclusive to my understanding (I may be wrong). However, if you are walking in Torah and accept Yeshua as the Messiah and soon to come King, you are grafted in to the vine.

Bless you, you are not gone out of your mind! Keep asking your questions, someone here usually has an answer or a link for you.

  8. Rico, I have just recently come to the understanding of the Torah teaching, and I have a small group that meets weekly. We have been doing so for about 7 years, and this is the most astonishing thing we have come across in a while.
I have been telling people for about two years that there has to be something that we are missing, as there are so many denominations from one bible. My father is Mormon and has been telling me that it is because the Scriptures are so misleading that we needed another word to guide us. I knew it was not the Word that was the problem, but that we were not following the Word as intended that created the division. As you can see, I have only come to this realization in the past month or so, and I am curious, do you have a series of Torah teachings that I can purchase?
Also, I am new, but doesn’t Paul teach that we will have the Harpazo at the last trumpet of Rosh HaShana, and then ten days later the Judgment of YHVH and then after 5 days, the Tribulation for the earth dwelers, and the Marriage Feast for the Bride? I say that becasue of the booths, and the Hoopa. Again, I am new, but this makes some sence to me.
Also, I am not sure, but how do we know if we are of the ten tribes?
Sorry, so many questions, and no one to talk to. My pastor and others think I have gone out of my mind.

It is ok Pakinpastor, most people who watch Rico and study Torahs friends, familys and former congregations think they are crazy. This is truly a site for the outsiders who have realized the church is wrong about so much and want to learn the truth. Hang in there. God bless

  9. Rico,

Fantastic teaching! We really have enjoyed it and you bring out some great points. Your passion and heart for the Torah is such a blessing.

One question on 1 Cor 10:8. In our translations, Paul states that 23,000 died on that day. As we read in the Torah portion, 24,000 died from the plague. Why the difference? Is this a translation error or is there some other significance to the discrepency?

  10. One of the teachers I had once, pointed out that when some things happened for the 1st time that were wrong, Elohim was swift to act. That kind of explains why we’re not struck down for the same thing(s) today… It’s not always apparent in scriptures for that being the case but it makes me think about what can happen for ‘the 1st time’ again…

Besides the sexual immorality and idolatry there was the murmerings which even though they might have been directed at the leadership were really against YHVH and lack of trust in Him to deal with it as He saw fit.

Having only listened to part 1 of this 2 part teaching,so far I must say that it gives further insight into explaining Yeshua’s present role as that of the High Priest who is making intercession for us today. I too was taught incorrectly while attending church for over 40 years that “Jesus” is presently King over the earth. When I first heard Rico’s teaching on Messiah being the Priest of War (I know that I probably stated that incorrectly) at His SECOND coming,it all made sense, and I could see the many errors that is taught in church concerning His present role. The church thinks that because He rose from the dead/resurrected,He is NOW literally the King of Kings and Lord of Lords believing that His earthly kingdom has been established here on earth. They don’t even attempt to teach anything out of the book of Revelation, for if they do,they would mess that up entirely also. I often wondered “how can Jesus be seated at the right hand of the Father yet be King of the earth too if OT scriptures state that He will have a throne on the earth and be seated Himself on the same throne that David was king over”? Doesn’t the Bible state that The Branch will sit anf rule upon His throne. I understand that Yeshua is The Branch, and having the 7 manifestations of the Spirit of the Lord, He will rule with righteousness? Isn’t the same throne He is to occupy in the future the same one which is out of the line of Jesse? I guess that the church assumes that He only sat at the right hand of the Father for a hot minute after His accension, and being omnipresent explains how He’s both at the Father’s right hand making intercession AND sitting on the throne ruling and reigning. Nevermind that it’s quite obvious with the shape things are in worldwide that we are NOT in the millenium at this time. Again, GREAT teaching! I do have one question that puzzles me though: I know that Phineas was correct in his zealousness for YHVH,but I’m not so sure that sexual immorality is the only way that we who are trying to learn and live Torah-observant lives may provoke YHVH to jealousy by committing idolatry. Can we commit idolatry aganist YHVH by other acts unbeknownst to us as believers even though we’re not fashioning false idols with our hands and bowing down to them? If we were doing such today and weren’t aware, wouldn’t YHVH judge us now swiftly as He did in the scriptures? Part 1 has me examining myself to see if I have some hidden idols which I haven’t acknowledged.

    1. Yes but remember that Zimri did this abomination WILLFULLY in front of the the whole community in rebellion. But, sometimes we so things involuntarily the different is between willfull and unwillfull sin.

      1. Rico is right, he did it willfully in rebellion against the almighty creator YHWH. Your a blessing Rico, and your a great teacher. It takes a lot of faith to do what you do Rico.
