The Letter to the Romans

Paul, slave of King Messiah Yeshua, called “apostle”[1], separated into God’s Good News that was promised through His prophets in the holy Scriptures concerning His son, the one being born from the lineage of David according to physical kinship[2]; and was appointed to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Yeshua, King Messiah, our Master, through whom we receive grace[3] and apostleship to bring about[4] obedience of faith among all the non-Judeans[5] on behalf of his name and in yourselves who are called to belong to Yeshua the King Messiah.  To all the beloved of God, called “holy-ones”, who are in Rome; grace to you and shalom from God our Father and the Master, Yeshua, the King Messiah.

Firstly, I am surely giving thanks to my God through Yeshua the King Messiah for all of you, because your faithfulness is being proclaimed in the whole world.  For God is my witness, whom I serve with all my heart[6] in the Good News of His son, as to how I am continually making remembrance of you at all times in my prayers, asking if somehow now at last I will succeed in the will of God to come to you.  For I am desiring to see you, in order to share some spiritual gift with you, in order to sustain you.  Now this is to be encouraged together with you through our mutual faithfulness, both you and I.  I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that often I have planned to come to you (though I have been prevented so far) so that I may reap some harvest among you also, just as among the rest of the non-Judeans.  I am indebted to both the Hellenists and the barbarians[7], both the wise and the foolish.  So, accordingly, I am eager to preach the Good News to you also who are in Rome.  For I am not ashamed of the Good News, for it is the power of God to deliver everyone who remains firm[8], to the Judean first and also to the Hellenist.  For in it the covenant loyalty of God is uncovered from faithfulness into faithfulness; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faithfulness[9]”.

[1] ἀπόστολος is from the verb ἀποστέλλω “to send out”, i.e. an emissary.

[2] sarx see discussion in Dunn, The Theology of Paul the Apostle, 1998, pg 65-66.

[3] χάρις (charis) is translated here as “grace” but would have called to mind its secular usage of reciprocity in patron-client relationships in the minds of the original audience.

[4] εἰς is a preposition used to denote moving towards a goal or place (BDAG)

[5] εθνος (ethnos) – a term referring to all non-Judeans; those outside of the kinship group.  The people in this group would not refer to themselves as ‘ethnos’.

[6]  “in my spirit” (NASB) the modern idiom would be “from the bottom of my heart,” “with all my heart” (IVP Bible Backgrounds Commentary: New Testament)

[7] The Hellenists (Greeks) called all non-Hellenist βαρβάροις (“barbarians”) in the same way the Judeans called all non-Judeans by the term goyim.

[8] Πιστεύω generally translated as “believe”.  This term does not refer to a mental state of conviction only, but a firmness in one’s actions towards that conviction.

[9] Hab 2:4 – Normally translated as “faith”, the Hebrew word is אֱמוּנָה which is never translated as “faith” anywhere else in the Hebrew Bible.  It is consistently translated as “faithfulness” or “faithfully” in other verses.

[10] ἀσέβεια in the LXX is translated from the word pesha which is willful rebellious sin
