Deuteronomy 26:1 - 29:9

Isaiah 60:1-22

ki tavo wt

This Parashah covers the instructions for first fruits offerings, the building of the altar on Mt. Ebal, and the blessings and curses ceremony.

Sometimes there are times when we just need to read and learn how to Hear and Obey. This portion is about learning that disobedience brings serious consequences.

This week's Torah Portion has multiple topics , underlying themes and legal principles within just a little over 3 Chapters. These chapters are focusing on the Royal Land Grant as Israel is getting ready to cross the Jordan to take possession of the Land promised by OUR Suzerain YHWH to Abraham and his descendants.

Have you ever wondered why..

Israel was to set up the stones at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim?
What exactly were those stones?
What are the legal concepts in Covenant Making behind "garments" and "sandals" in Scripture and Ancient Near East?
Is the legal language of the garments and sandal found in the First Century Writings?
We will investigate the answers to these questions so we will be able to recognize just how much even the smallest of detail in certain verses ties into Scripture being a legal Constitution to the Commonwealth of Israel.

We will also discuss discuss the importance of justice and righteousness and our mandate to not pervert justice and how important this is in light of all the doom & gloom end-times predictions that are plaguing the HR movement.

This page includes Torah Portions from multiple years covered by Wisdom in Torah. Each year we covered the Torah from a different perspective so you can explore each Parashah from a different perspective and focus.

  • 2010 Portions: Focus on Messianic connections in the Parashah
  • ANET Portions: Focus on the ancient Near Eastern cultural context of the Parashah
  • Mitzvot Portions: Focus on explaining and exploring the commandments found in the Parashah (in progress)
  • 2015 Portions: Revisiting the Parashah looking at the ancient cultural context more in depth with additional areas that have been researched
  • Brit Portions: Focus on connecting the Brit Hadashah (New Testament) to the Parashah

Rico Cortes

I am a teacher of Scriptures, Torah follower, and believer in Messiah Yeshua. I have been given the opportunity to share the Word of God with many believers around the world. My work as a servant of the Most High God has allowed me to be a voice to spread the good news of the New Testament, unveiling its truth through context and the obedience to the Almighty through his Torah.

  1. Rico,
There are many reasons that I enjoy watching you teach, but one is how humble you are, always. Another is I love the excitement and joy with which you bring forth the Torah, and lastly I absolutely love seeing how much you LOVE your God. It is so obvious just to watch you talk about Him. My Pastor used to have a saying that “If you play around a muddy creek long enough, you were bound to fall in!” I can only pray that as I continue to study under your teachings that those things will “rub off” on me! I have loved Yahweh for many years, but I must confess that until I started watching you, I didn’t realize how much that I wasn’t showing it outwardly! You are an inspiration to me on many levels and I praise God for you and your family. I believe that He has given us a great example to follow. Thank you for submitting yourself to His calling on your life!
    Shalom,
    Deb

  2. The Glory of a King is that His citziens have basic necessities. Poverty in the subjects of the kingdom; does not speak well of the King. He has to help find a way to relieve the poverty. If not he is a tyrant, is not the Sheppard King; not the Good Sheppard.

It’s true that if we don’t follow His instructions we received drout, earthquakes; however I believe it can be documented that since Oct 1991, Sr. Bush began the talks of dividing the FAther’s land. Zecharia 12 He will destroy the nations who come up to divide Jerusalem. This is the 20th year of Oslw in Yom Kippur – need to hit our faces before YHVH.

  3. You are correct Israel in ’48 did not lay a boundary stone. Modern times they failed to declare land boundaries.

The people who set up standards for discussion 2 state solution; banned use of scripture as evidence for Jews “right of return”.

We are not allowed to eat the fruit of a tree for 1st three years; I suppose they planted fruit trees in vaious years to have continuous 1st fruit? So, is 1st fruit all the fruit in a growing cycle from that 3 yr old tree? But if the tree is 4 years there is no 1st fruit? Or can one tell when one tree begins a 2nd cycle of 1st fruit? How many Kohanim? sounds like a whole lot a fruit was brought; how could they eat it all? If I am the temple of the HS; does this mean these tithes and offerings are for me to set aside in my personal budget; ways to give 10% for G-d’s business, and every 3rd year an additional 10% for the indigent? A man who does not care for his own family is worse than an infidel. What about tithing you way out of debt? If I agree to purchase a car and the payments now I can’t afford; does that mean I short the car dealer to pay YHVH? Doew He accept all tithes and offerings? no He does not have to accept the blemished; funds from ill gain. Malachi teaches the priest accepted blemished animals; Abba was not pleased. There is ethics in where/how we give funds. Should all the widows give their last penny in offering? no I believe there’s 2 sides to the coin; yes Yeshua made the woman a memorial; but that widow women should never have been down toher last penny? Israel at that time was not taking care of the poor; Rome the oppressor caused the Jewish populace to be in poverty, only the Hellenist of the day; which included some of the priesthood were wealthy. Be wise in tithes and offerings. I have yet to hear one leader declare this is 7th year no tithes at this time. Why?

  4. Thank you Scott Hay for your comment we feel the same way. We can not wait for Rico to start teaching with the “NT” and linking it to the “OT”, it is soo wonderful to FULLY understand our Bible now, and be able to show those who are willing to listen the “OT” practices that were still taking place in the “NT” that we would not have picked up on our own if not for RIco’s teachings. 🙂 It is sheer joy and a pleasure to see your excitement that is contagious, please don’t ever lose it.

  5. Thank you Rico for sharing why you left the Christian church in this teaching. It was the same for us! Why were people giving so much into the church & yet it was not a storehouse for those in need to draw from? Yet we wandered for a couple more years till we found Torah & YOU, our teacher (only last April).
Thank you so much for teaching on the true tithes. & yet we want to know more.
& Bill says thank you for leaving us with a blessing in this teaching at the end!

    Shalom Friend,
    Bill & Kimela Shucart

  6. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi and all who assist with Wisdom In Torah

My Mom and I have so enjoyed repeating the teachings of the Parasha with you this year. We learned so much more this year hearing the teachings for a second time. Thank you so much Rabbi for making these teachings available to us again this year. I do hope that the teachings will still be available for free when the new reading cycle begins October 13, 2012.

It is awesome watching you, Rabbi, get so excited when you teach. Mom and I see the glory of Adonai alllll over you. It is an honor to give our Tithe to you each month, our teacher each Shabbat and Feast, as well as being there when we need you. Blessed be the name of Our Beloved Elohim for anointing you and teaching us through you. What a truly awesome example of a servant of Adonai you are. Blessed be the name of Yeshua and the Ruach HaCodesh.

Baruch HaShem to Yolanda, the boys, and the rest of your family and all involved with WIT.

  7. I have heard a melody in my spirit all week in the morning while arising, and while working at school. A melody not heard before, and there were no words until today after hearing this teaching. And the words that belong to this melody are the Words of Isaiah 60. It is time to Arise! Thank you, Rico, for this glorious message of Hope in our Blessed YHWH Elohim! DeVora Clark:)

  8. Thank you so much Rico for this teaching. I have been looking forward to this Parashah and your commentary for a few months now. I’ve come out of the prosperity movement myself almost 2 years ago and thought the pastor would sometimes give a disclaimer about tithing to your own demise (don’t go in debt to tithe, or go without food to tithe), the principle doctrine taught is the same that tithing is what unlocks God’s blessings in your life.

I even recall hearing from the pulpit that all the curses of the law were defeated at the cross, and that God’s blessings are all there for us to claim now in faith once we begin to tithe (and confess his blessings into our lives with our mouths daily). They would then back up this with verses in the New Testament where God says “test me in this” (Mal 3:10). Sure, God wants to bless us, and wants us to tithe, but the tithe is not the only thing he wants from us.

I greatly disagreed with them announcing figures from the pulpit as well (“You guys gave our guests last night $100,000 as an offering!”; really, does the congregation & public really need to know that?). If only people would read the entire chapter without their “law is done away with” blinders on, they’d see that prosperity doesn’t equal how much money you have/give. It’s about honouring God and his commandments.

I know the church I came out of is filled with good people whose desire is to please God; but I feel that getting back to the Hebrew Roots is truly the way to understand the Father and please him the way he told us to.

Thank you so much for this teaching, Rico! May God continue to bless you, your family & your ministry!

    Shalom!

  9. Hi Rico, Thank you so much for all you do to help us learn! Isn’t juno the pagan god that June was named after and janus the pagan god January was named after?

  10. Are the blessings and curses only applied to the nation of Israel because they entered the covenant, or do they apply to other nations as well…such as the USA? When I heard you recite Deut. 28:23-24 I sort of jolted upright because the USA is experimenting with weather modification (HAARP) and one of the primary chemical components that they use in their cloud seeding is iron.
